Siberian Husky Overview
The Siberian husky was bred by the Chukchi people of northeast Siberia as a sled dog capable of pulling light loads over vast frozen distances. In 1925, a relay of husky teams famously carried diphtheria serum across Alaska to Nome — a feat that cemented the breed's legend. Huskies are still sled dogs at heart: they love to run, pull and explore.
Despite their wolf-like looks, huskies are friendly and outgoing with almost everyone — people and dogs alike. They have little guarding instinct and are not typically aggressive. They are, however, independent thinkers with a strong prey drive and a legendary talent for escaping: a husky that wants out will climb, dig and chew its way to freedom. They are also prolific talkers, 'talking' in howls and woo-woos rather than barks.
Huskies need a securely fenced yard, daily running opportunities and an owner who understands their independent nature. Their dense coats shed heavily and they are not suited to hot climates. For an active owner with space and patience, the husky is a magnificent, affectionate and endlessly entertaining companion.
