French Bulldog Overview
The French bulldog began as a companion for lace workers in Nottingham, England, who brought their toy bulldogs to France in the 1800s. There, breeders refined the dogs into the small, bat-eared charmer we know today, and by the turn of the 20th century the breed was a favorite of Parisian society. Fast-forward to today, and the Frenchie routinely tops popularity charts around the world.
Frenchies are playful, affectionate and remarkably adaptable. They bond closely with their people and are happiest when they are part of the action — whether that means lounging on the sofa or trotting along on a short walk. They generally get along well with children and other pets, though they can be possessive of their favorite human. Their charming, sometimes clownish personalities make them endlessly entertaining companions.
Because of their flat faces, Frenchies are brachycephalic: they overheat easily and can struggle to breathe in hot or humid weather. Exercise should be gentle and limited in warm conditions, and swimming should always be avoided. With sensible care, moderate grooming and plenty of love, the French bulldog makes a wonderful companion for apartments and families alike.
