Golden Retriever Overview
The golden retriever was developed in the Scottish Highlands in the 19th century to retrieve waterfowl for hunters. Breeders crossed the now-extinct yellow retriever with the Tweed water spaniel, the Irish setter and the bloodhound to create a dog with a soft mouth, a love of water and a gentle disposition. Today the golden consistently ranks among the most popular breeds in the world, and it is easy to see why.
Temperament is where the golden really shines. These dogs are famously friendly with people, children and other animals, and their patience makes them excellent family companions.
