Poodle (Standard)

The poodle's image as a pampered lapdog hides a working-dog history. Originally bred in Germany as a water retriever — the name comes from the German word pudeln, meaning to splash — the poodle was refined in France, where it became a beloved companion of artists and aristocrats. The breed comes in three sizes — standard, miniature and toy — that share the same intelligence and character.

Poodles are widely considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds, second only to the border collie on many rankings. They are quick learners, athletic and eager to perform, excelling in obedience, agility and even water work. Their temperament is proud and alert; they can be reserved with strangers but are devoted to their families. Without enough mental stimulation, a bored poodle will invent its own entertainment — often by barking or finding mischief.

The poodle's curly, low-shedding coat is a major draw for allergy-conscious owners, but it is high-maintenance: it mats easily and requires professional grooming every 4–6 weeks. Between trims, daily brushing is essential. With grooming and exercise covered, the poodle is a lively, loyal and wonderfully trainable companion for homes of many shapes and sizes.
