Boxer Overview
The boxer was developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now-extinct Bullenbeisser, a hunting and baiting dog. German breeders shaped the breed into a versatile working dog — police work, guarding and later the military. The boxer's name is thought to come from its habit of 'boxing' with its front paws during play, a trait it never quite grows out of.
Boxers are energetic, intelligent and famously playful. They adore their families and are especially gentle and patient with children, making them a classic family dog. They are protective of their people and alert, though not aggressive when properly trained. Boxers are exuberant — they bounce, lean, 'kidney-bean' with joy and generally act like oversized puppies for most of their lives.
A boxer needs daily exercise, consistent training and plenty of company — they do not do well left alone for long hours. Their short coats are easy to groom, but they are prone to certain health conditions, including heart issues and cancer. For an active family that can match their energy and humor, the boxer is a loyal and endlessly entertaining companion.
