The Cavalier King Charles spaniel is a silky-eared sweetheart that lives to be close to its people. Gentle, affectionate and endlessly adaptable, the Cavalier is one of the world's most loving companion breeds.
The Cavalier King Charles spaniel takes its name from King Charles II of England, who was rarely seen without his beloved spaniels. The modern breed was revived in the 1920s when an American breeder sought to recreate the original longer-nosed, flat-headed toy spaniel from paintings of the royal court. Today the Cavalier is cherished worldwide for its gentle, affectionate nature.
Cavaliers are the definition of a companion dog: they want nothing more than to be near their people. They are friendly with everyone — strangers, children and other dogs — and adapt happily to city apartments and country homes alike. They are playful and sweet-tempered, quick to learn, and remarkably forgiving, which makes them excellent first dogs and therapy dogs.
Cavaliers need daily walks and play, but their exercise needs are modest. Their beautiful silky coats need regular brushing, and their long ears need weekly cleaning. The breed has a high rate of certain heart and neurological conditions, so choosing a health-tested breeder matters. For a gentle, devoted companion, the Cavalier is hard to beat.
