Chihuahua Overview

The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world, named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where the modern breed was popularized. Its ancestors likely descended from the Techichi, a small companion dog kept by the Toltec civilization over a thousand years ago. The breed's ancient lineage and huge personality make it one of the most distinctive dogs on the planet.

Chihuahuas are bold, alert and utterly devoted to their person. They are often suspicious of strangers and can be fiercely protective, and they are known for being 'velcro dogs' that follow their owner everywhere. They are surprisingly intelligent and can learn tricks quickly, though their strong will and tiny bladders make house training a patience test.

Because of their size, Chihuahuas are fragile — they are easily injured by rough play, drops or being stepped on, so homes with toddlers need careful management. They also chill quickly and need sweaters in cold weather. With gentle handling, daily walks and plenty of lap time, the Chihuahua is a loyal, spirited and endlessly entertaining companion.
